The above-ground growth consists of long basal petioles bearing paired, glossy elliptical leaflets with a thick, leathery texture. The inflorescence forms low near the soil surface, featuring a cream-colored spadix enclosed by a pale green spathe. It belongs to the Araceae family and stores water throughout its tissues, an adaptation that carries it through prolonged dry periods.

Origin

The species originates from the dry regions of Eastern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar. In its native habitat, it grows on rocky slopes, in dry deciduous forests, and in savanna grasslands with pronounced dry seasons. Fleshy underground tubers and glossy succulent leaves evolved as water-storing adaptations for harsh droughts, dictating the need for infrequent watering and fast-draining substrate in home care.

History

The species was first described by English botanist George Loddiges in 1829 as Caladium zamiifolium. In 1856, Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the distinct genus Zamioculcas, and German botanist Adolf Engler published the current accepted combination Zamioculcas zamiifolia in 1905. The plant remained a rare collector item until 1996, when Dutch commercial nurseries initiated mass propagation and worldwide distribution.

Care

Light

Requires bright indirect light: east or west windows work best. The plant tolerates shade and keeps growing even in the interior of rooms, but in deep shadow the foliage loses its gloss and rich color, while petioles stretch out weakly. Avoid direct summer sun on south-facing windows to prevent leaf scorch. Move the plant closer to a window or set up artificial grow lights during short winter days.

Water

Water only after the entire volume of soil in the pot dries out completely. In spring and summer, watering is typically needed 1-2 times a month, dropping to once every 3-4 weeks in winter. Soil

Select pots made of flexible plastic equipped with bottom drainage holes. Flexible plastic walls yield under expanding tubers without damaging the rhizome and simplify extraction during repotting. Fertilizer

Mature size

Indoors, the ZZ plant reaches a height of 24-35 inches (60-90 cm) with a spread of 24-31 inches (60-80 cm). It forms a dense cluster of upright, fleshy petioles lined with shiny pinnate leaflets measuring 3-6 inches (8-15 cm) long. Dwarf cultivars like 'Zenzi' stay under 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) tall, while 'Raven' features very dark, near-black purple foliage.

Blooming

The inflorescence of the ZZ plant consists of a cream-colored spadix enclosed by a pale green spathe, emerging near the base of the petioles in late summer or fall. Indoors, blooming occurs rarely on mature specimens stimulated by bright light, a snug pot, and a cool, dry winter rest period. The spathe remains fresh for several weeks. Cut spent flower stalks off near the soil line to prevent energy loss from seed production.

Dormancy

From October through March, the ZZ plant enters a phase of relative rest triggered by shorter daylight hours. Cease all fertilizer applications completely and reduce watering to once per month. Position the container away from cold window glass and protect it from cold drafts when airing the room.

Support

The plant exhibits a sturdy, self-supporting upright growth habit and needs no staking. Thick, fleshy petioles effortlessly support the weight of the pinnate foliage on their own. Staking individual stems is only required for old, overgrown specimens whose shoots have stretched from low light.

Problems

Rot

Excess moisture and stagnant soil cause tuber decay and stem softening. Noticeable symptoms include yellowing leaves and watery spots near petiole bases. Prevent this by using porous substrate and watering only after the soil dries out completely. Etiolation
