Description
Stromanthe sanguinea is a large evergreen perennial that forms a bushy clump of stiff lance-shaped leaves on long petioles. The foliage boasts striking contrast: the dark green upper surface features cream or white variegation, while the underside is a vibrant purplish-red. This reddish backing helps the plant capture scarce light rays in the dark forest understory. The plant exhibits nyctinasty, meaning it folds its leaves vertically upward at night in response to darkness. This daily movement earned it the popular nickname of a "prayer plant."
