Description
The rubber plant forms a powerful evergreen tree with an erect woody trunk and a lush canopy. Its large elliptic leaves are coated with a thick waxy cuticle, which gives the blades their characteristic gloss, reflects scorching sun rays, and protects the plant from moisture evaporation. Unfurling young leaves are protected by a bright red stipule, which keeps the delicate tissues from drying out until the blade fully expands. When any tissue is damaged, the rubber plant secretes a thick milky sap, latex, which instantly seals wounds with a protective film and deters pests. In high humidity conditions, aerial roots form on the stem, helping to capture water vapor and creating additional structural supports for heavy branches.
