Description
An evergreen perennial without an aboveground stem. Its glossy dark green leaves grow on long petioles directly from the rhizome, helping it survive in the shady forests of South America. Thin and flexible leaves easily catch faint light under the tree canopy, but wilt quickly when the soil runs dry. The inflorescence consists of a spadix (a dense spike with tiny flowers) and a spathe in the form of a white sail-like bract that gradually turns green after pollination. The plant maintains its upright shape only through turgor, meaning the water pressure inside the juicy leaf stalks.
