Evolving in a mild subtropical climate equipped the tree to handle hot, humid summers and cool, frost-free winters. History

The species earned its name from Frank Meyer, a daring agricultural explorer who discovered the unusual tree growing near Beijing in 1908 and shipped cuttings back to the United States. Initially classified by botanists as a simple lemon variant, later analysis proved it was a distinct hybrid, formally named Citrus × meyeri. By the mid-20th century, the tree's immense popularity almost caused a horticultural disaster when inspectors discovered that most existing plants were asymptomatic carriers of the lethal citrus tristeza virus. To save the citrus industry from total collapse, the University of California developed a clean, virus-free clone in the 1950s known as the 'Improved Meyer lemon', which remains the only legally cultivated variety for commercial and home growing today.

Care

Light

Provide bright, direct sunlight for at least 8-12 hours daily to support active growth and fruit production. A south-facing window is the optimal indoor location. With adequate light, leaves develop a rich dark green color, whereas in low light they pale and branches become leggy. Water

Always opt for dense, heavy materials rather than lightweight plastic, as a lightweight pot will easily tip over under the top-heavy weight of the spreading canopy and developing fruit.

Fertilizer

From spring through fall, apply a specialized liquid citrus fertilizer high in nitrogen every 2-4 weeks. Always dilute the formula to half the recommended strength and apply it only to pre-wetted soil to prevent chemical burns on the roots. Blooming

Thanks to its remontant nature, the tree can produce blooms year-round, though the most explosive flush of buds always arrives in early spring. The flowers are white inside with a faint purple tint on the outside, lasting for about a week and filling the surrounding room with a heavy, jasmine-like fragrance. Meyer lemon is self-pollinating, but indoors you can improve fruit set by gently brushing a soft artist's brush over the flowers to hand-pollinate them. Spent, unpollinated flowers simply dry up and drop off the branches naturally, so manual deadheading is unnecessary.

Dormancy

In response to shorter winter days, the Meyer lemon enters a natural physiological dormancy, completely halting all new leaf and branch growth. Pruning

Perform all structural shaping and sanitary pruning in early spring, strictly before the active growing season begins. First, completely remove any dead, snapped, or diseased wood, alongside any thin shoots crossing inward toward the center: clearing the interior improves airflow, which lowers the risk of fungal infections. Make every cut clean at a 45-degree angle just above a healthy bud that points outward, away from the central trunk.

The easiest way to propagate the tree is using semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer, when sap flow is active. Sudden leaf drop

This is a common stress reaction to sudden changes in light, severe temperature swings, cold drafts, or extreme underwatering. Scale insects

These pests look like small, flat brown bumps firmly attached to stems and often leave a sticky honeydew residue on leaves. Spider mites
