Description
English Ivy grows as an evergreen woody vine that develops aerial adventitious roots to anchor itself firmly to tree bark and rocky cliffs. The juvenile stems produce leaves with 3-5 distinct lobes, a shape adapted to catch scarce sunlight on the shaded forest floor, whereas mature flowering shoots bear smooth oval foliage without lobes. Small greenish-yellow flowers grouped in umbel clusters bloom in autumn and eventually develop into toxic black berries. In indoor cultivation, variegated cultivars quickly fade to solid green if deprived of adequate light.
