Description
Strelitzia grows as an evergreen herbaceous perennial, forming a dense fan of rigid banana-like leaves on elongated petioles. The root system consists of thick fleshy rhizomes. These modified underground stems are adapted to store water and nutrients, helping the plant survive extended dry spells. The inflorescence produces a stiff green boat-shaped spathe from which vivid orange sepals and blue petals emerge sequentially. This bird-head flower structure is a clear adaptation for ornithophily: in the wild, sunbirds transfer pollen by perching directly on the blue petals.
